Detroit Metropolitan Census 2000 Fact Sheets Series

The Skillman Center for Children and the Center for Urban Studies, College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs, Wayne State University, have joined forces to develop a series of child-specific fact sheets based on the recent census data released for the area comprised of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Besides looking at each individual county and the region as a whole, we have identified several key cities within the tri-county area. Tracking changing distributions across age, race/ethnicity, family structure, gender, and economic status by geographic unit allows us to see how communities have been impacted differently by demographic change. In addition, we have provided timeline comparisons so that trends can be readily identified within specific locations.

Voices from the City (2002)
(PDF)
On July 31, 2002, the Skillman Center for Children and the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs co-sponsored a working forum entitled Safe and Sound: Making a Commitment to Detroit Kids. The intent of the workshop was to have participants think about the Detroit community and consider how we as a community can move toward becoming a more safe, non-violent community in which to raise children. Representatives from many Detroit agencies attended. Their thoughts are recorded in this report.

State of the Child: Metropolitan Trends, 1990-1999 (PDF)
The primary goal of this report is to provide trend data for the metropolitan Detroit area and to identify the major policy changes that have occurred during the period 1990 through 1999 that might have an impact on existing and future data. The report specifically focuses on data and policies affecting children in the areas of poverty and economic security, education, health and behavioral health, child welfare and juvenile delinquency. To the extent possible, we have placed local trends (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties and to the extent possible the five of the cities in these counties, Detroit, Mt. Clemens, Pontiac, Taylor, and Warren) in the context of national and state
trends.
